Right Here, Right Now

I will keep my mind from wandering into places
It isn't yet meant to see
Until it's collected all the memories
The present moment holds for me.

Have you ever noticed how something can happen in your life, good or bad, and your mind barely registers it before jumping ahead? Yeah, that's the shit I am constantly working against. It's not easy, but definitely beneficial. Without pacing ourselves we add unnecessary stress to our lives and we miss the full effect of things we should be taking time to celebrate.

What might come next shouldn't matter more than being present for what is happening now. Of course, there should be thought that goes into whatever steps may need to follow, but focusing on what you are experiencing for what it is at this very moment is what needs to happen first. Moving onto the next thing or making decisions without having fully absorbed the moments before is where we often go wrong. If we had just stopped long enough to see the whole picture as it unveiled itself we might have avoided some of the mistakes we made by jumping too quickly ahead.

The more I redirect these kinds of thoughts the better I get at experiencing the present. There is a time when thinking ahead, either to solve a problem or to set a goal, makes perfect sense. It's just rarely before the moment you're in has had time to happen. A little more breathing and a lot of willpower to just be idle long enough to absorb all there is to absorb.
