Be the kind of person who is present and ready to do whatever is needed to support others. Be capable of assessing priorities quickly and taking action when decisions are most crucial. Be open to accepting all the times you didn't come through for someone, and recommit to being the person you would want to count on if ever you needed someone.
Step outside of yourself and your comfort zone, and learn to put those around you first once in awhile. Forget that you have a ton of laundry or that you may have planned a day of rest when a friend needs you. Those things will be there later, but you only get one chance to make the difference your friend or family member may well need at a time when they truly need it.
It is next to impossible to not be guilty to some degree of self-absorption; we spend every moment of our existence within ourselves, so naturally self-interest is our primary concern. Sometimes what we need most, and rarely recognize it, is to focus on someone or something else in a way that gives both the other person and ourselves a depth and meaning we could not find otherwise.
On the flip side, we also need to know when to take a step back from being the support of someone else in order to restore balance. It is far too easy to get wrapped up in the lives and trials of those around us and lose touch with our own journey. If we are constantly giving of ourselves without giving to ourselves as well, we risk losing direction and all sense of who we are.
Limits are essential to set for our well-being and that of those we care about. Challenges are tools that, when used correctly, can help us strengthen our resolve, extend our capacity to give care to others and add invaluable experiences to our lives. Balance is the key to everything we do, all that we are and the sum of who we want to be.
Find you source of happiness by creating a life that is well-rounded, compassionate, positive and fully aware.
